SIS30619 Cert III in Outdoor Leadership -  Roping 2026

DESCRIPTION

This course is designed for people working or wanting to work in the Outdoor Industry, specialising in Abseiling, Top Rope Climbing & Canyoning.

This course allows participants to develop their decision making, canyoning, climbing and abseiling abilities.

The training is designed to reflect the role of those who operate cliff-based environments in defined contexts.

Leadership skills are developed to organising activities of self and others, as well as contributing to technical solutions of a non-routine or contingency nature.

LENGTH OF COURSE

This course is delivered over 22 days of face-to-face delivery in the Blue Mountains. If core units are required to be completed, this will be conducted online via self-directed learning.

As prior qualifications are required for this course it is anticipated that the core units will be achieved either by Credit Transfer or RPL If core units gap training is required to be completed, this will be conducted online via self-directed learning

ACCREDITATION

SIS30619 - Certificate III in Outdoor Leadership The qualification is taken from the SIS10 - Sport, Fitness and Recreation Training Package.

ELIGIBILITY/ENTRY REQUIREMENTS

Please Note - this is not an entry-level course. Candidates must hold a formal Certificate III qualification or higher in Outdoor Leadership or demonstrate equivalent industry experience to be eligible for the course.

Examples of sufficient relevant skills and knowledge for entry into the qualification must include:

- Previous qualification at the AQF level below or

- Previous experience in the outdoor Leadership industry and interest in outdoor pursuits

** All applicants are required to provide copies of previous qualifications and a current CV to us before your place on the course is confirmed.

Entry into this qualification will be based on our professional judgement in consultation with the individual. 5 Star Training reserves the right only to allow enrolment to this course if students are that the required standard.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

You will also be exposed to cold and wet environments and undertake a range of abseils in rugged and unfamiliar terrain. You may be required to carry backpacks with equipment weighing up to 20kg. Participants should have the physical attributes to participate in adventurous physical activities.

 

Successful participants will need physical capacity and personal skills to work in small groups.

The remaining elective units can be selected from Groups A to AB, Group AC, elsewhere in the SIS Training Package, or from any other current training package or accredited course.

SISOABS006 - Establish ropes for single-pitch abseiling on natural surfaces

SISOABS009 - Lead single-pitch abseiling activities on natural surfaces

SISOFLD006 - Navigate in tracked environments

SISORSC002 - Perform vertical rescues

Group H: Climbing, Natural Surfaces, Top Rope

SISOCLM002 - Top rope climb single pitches, natural surfaces

SISOCLM006 - Establish belays for single pitch climbing on natural surfaces

SISOCLM009 - Lead single pitch climbing activities on natural surfaces, top rope climbing

Group E Canyoning, Easy to Intermediate

SISOCAY001 - Traverse canyons

SISOCAY002 - Abseil in easy to intermediate canyons

SISOCAY004 - Establish ropes and belays for abseils in easy to intermediate canyons

SISOCAY006 - Lead canyoning activities, easy to intermediate canyons

General Electives

SISCAQU020 Perform water rescues

**Note that progression to the Canyon skill electives is based on the professional judgement of our instructor team.  The alternate pathway is to complete Artificial Abseil units.

Do I need previous roping experience?

Roping experience is not essential. However, industry knowledge, life experience or work experience is essential.

 

What if I do not meet the required standard during the training block?

Following the training block, the 5 Star Team will investigate the outcome, and a pathway for reassessment will be recommended and provided to the student.

COURSE FEES

Fee Structure

Course fees are calculated using the Smart and Skilled Calculator. This course may be available under NSW fee-free funding, subject to availability. We will notify you if fee-free spots become available.

Please note: Fee-free spots are limited and determined by the NSW government. Once all spots are filled, the fee-free option will close.

Fee-Free Training Eligibility

You will be eligible for fee-free training if you are:

·        NSW Veterans and their recognised partners or spouses

·        Students with disability

·        Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islanders

Smart & Skilled General Eligibility

To qualify for NSW Smart & Skilled fee-free or subsidised training, you must be:

·        15 years old or over

·        No longer at school

·        Living or working in NSW

·        An Australian citizen, Australian permanent resident, humanitarian visa holder, or New Zealand citizen

Payment Process

If fees apply, you will receive an invoice and payment plan options after your commitment ID has been created through Smart and Skilled.

Approximate Fee Structure

·        Non-Centrelink recipients:$1,200.00 (with Credit Transfer and RPL applied)

·        Centrelink recipients: $250.00

This course has various venues, predominantly based in the Blue Mountains National Park

 

EQUIPMENT:

5 Star Training& Consulting has equipment that can be used for the duration of the course; however, If there if you are looking to purchase your own equipment, the listcan be found below:

 

-              Climbing/Abseiling Harness

-              Climbing Helmet

-              5 Alloy Locking Carabiners

-              1 short and 1 long Prussick

-              ATC or similar

-              Figure of 8

-              Personal Anchor System

-              Pully

 

Additionally, it is recommended the following outdoor clothing and equipment:

•             A large comfortable backpack (over55L)

•             sturdy outdoor shoes

•             Season appropriate outdoor clothing

•             Sunscreen

•             Water bottles that have up to 2L of carrying capacity

•             Headlamp

•             Sunglasses

•             Whistle

•             Multi tool or pocketknife

•             Personal first aid kit includes blister tape, and any personal medication required
